Smithsonian Magazine February 2009

Charles Darwin was born on February 12, 1809. At the age of 51 he published On the Origins of Species, an important work that presented compelling evidence that all species of life have evolved over time from common ancestors in a process he called natural selection. Darwin's research was criticized then and remains a controversial subject for some even today, yet it remains the basis for modern evolutionary theory. Learn more about Darwin's world in Smithsonian Magazine's: What Darwin Didn't Know.
