And the Wind Came, and the Rain Came...

7th-Grade Math/Science Cluster Challenge Project

Oh no, McDevitt 7th graders are “stranded” on a deserted island! Now what? Using scale, ratio and proportional relationships, students located their position near New Zealand. Using some of the material that washed up on shore, they designed a shelter. Below is a list of the “real world” material and our substitute for it:

Real World/Substitute
logs/craft sticks
strip of plane siding/aluminum foil
tarp from rescues raft/Wax paper
rope/string
mud/clay

Working in groups, students measured the proportional amount of material and built a shelter that would be wind and rain resistant. Using the wind and rain tests, students were assessed on how well their structures were built and how well they measured and used the necessary substitute material.

With the buidling and testing phase complete, students presented their structure to the class in infomercial format.

What do you think? Take a look at the top 2 Cluster winners!

Infomercial #1
Hongo Gongo Thingo Jingo
Imagine being stuck on an island without any shelter. Well now, you have hope with the Hongo Gongo Thingo Jingo.

This shelter has a removable door, can fit 3 to 4 people, and is water and wind resistant. It is also easy to build. This shelter kit has been tested by the cluster challenges group with high winds and pouring rain. It has been able to withstand all of this pressure. If you are stuck with more than two people, no problem! This amazing shelter can fit a whole three to people! Last if you are not close to the people you are stranded with just use the removable door to be separated from them.

So, next time you’re stranded on an island, just pull out your handy dandy Hongo Gongo Thingo Jingo! And remember, it doesn’t have to look good to be good. Buy now and you will receive an extra shelter for an easy payment of $13.99.
